Constant Artz was born in Paris in 1870, the son of the then well-known painter David Artz. As early as 1874, the Artz family moved back to The Hague. Father Artz, who had himself once been a pupil of Jozef Israels, was little influenced by his new surroundings during his Parisian period. He mainly painted Dutch rural life with well-executed depictions of farmers and farm women.
