Constant Artz was born in Paris in 1870, the son of the then well-known painter David Artz. In 1874, the Artz family moved back to The Hague in Holland. Father Artz, who had himself once studied with Jozef Israels, was little influenced by his new surroundings during his time in Paris. He mainly painted Dutch rural life with well-executed depictions of farmers and farmwives
