Constant Artz (1870–1951): a painter of Dutch intimacy.

Constant Artz was born in Paris in 1870, the son of the renowned Hague School painter David Adolph Constant Artz. Although his birthplace was French, his artistic roots were undeniably in the Netherlands. In 1874, the family returned to The Hague, where Constant grew up in an environment steeped in art, craftsmanship, and the tradition of the Hague School. His father himself had studied with Jozef Israëls, one of the great masters of 19th-century Dutch painting.

Buyers often experience his paintings as a mirror of domesticity and connection. The duck family—mother and ducklings—is seen as a gentle symbol of care, protection, and continuity. These are works that are not only decorative but also emotionally resonant.

Constant Artz developed a recognizable and beloved signature: intimate depictions of duck families in and around the water. His work is refined, warm, and accessible, with a strong emphasis on atmosphere and domesticity.
